Women in Defense Central Florida Chapter (WID CFL) hosted their Annual Scholarship Presentation on April 18, 2019, to award two female students with academic scholarships. The WID CFL review committee selected the following students as scholarship recipients:
- Ms. Sanchez – Lake Brantley High School, Dual Enrolment with Seminole State College, Air Force ROTC, Aeronautical Engineering Major
- Ms. Yates – Oviedo High School, Dual Enrolment with the University Of Central Florida, Accepted to University of South Florida, Cell and Molecular Biology Major
Both young ladies demonstrated in their application exceptional grades, achievement, commitment and goals for their future in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field. They each received a $1,000 scholarship check for the 2019-20 school year.
We also had the honor of hosting as guest speaker David L. Brewer III, US Navy Vice Admiral (ret). Vice Adm. Brewer served our country for over 35 years in the United States Navy through positions ranging from serving as the Vice Chief of Naval Education and Training to serving as the Commander of Military Sealift Command with a fleet of over 120 ships. Upon retirement from the Navy, he continued his service to our nation when he was selected as the 46th Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) 2006-2008.
Vice Adm. Brewer spoke to the group about the importance of having women in leadership positions and how he has witnessed exceptional strength and performance by women throughout his life and military career. He encouraged the awardees to continue their path of excellence and the attendees to continue the work of mentoring and sponsoring women in STEM. We extend a special thanks to Vice Adm. Brewer for taking the time to share his experiences and inspire us.
WID CFL wishes the scholarship awardees the very best as they pursue their academic goals. We congratulate them on their achievements to date and look forward to hearing about their accomplishments in the future!
